fieldworkSurvival Wisdom are privileged to work in association with the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) with the Institute of British Geographers (IBG). The society is the largest and most active learned geographical society and professional body for geography and geographers in the world.

To recognise their long experience of expedition leadership, two of our team have the honour of being Fellows of this Royal Society. We are qualified as RGS trainers and authorised to deliver the Off-Site Safety Management (OSSM) course, an RGS-endorsed and recommended programme for any expedition leader.

Fieldwork and Expedition – Off-Site Safety Management (OSSM) courses

The OSSM is a response to concerns about safety in off-site activities. It gives attendees the chance to understand the relevant legislation in practical situations, and is appropriate for those in various situations with responsibility for children, young people or adults on geography or environmental field trips, on sporting away events or organised activities.

Target Group Resources Page

Any adults working with young people or adults where they need to plan, manage and evaluate off-site safety policies and activities will benefit. It’s particularly appropriate for teachers, lecturers, trainers and youth workers, and relevant, too, to those in organisations seeking compliance with the new British Standard, BS 8848: the specification for the provision of visits, fieldwork, expeditions and adventure activities, outside the UK.

Prior Learning

Although there are no formal entry requirements, attendees may find it helpful to draw on previous knowledge and experience of managing workplace safety. Basic understanding of planning processes and risk assessment and safety management may also provide useful starting points. Experience of leading visits, activities or expeditions will also help.

Guided Learning Hours

We think an average delegate with the recommended prior learning will take around 15 guided learning hours to acquire the understanding and skills to meet the assessment objectives successfully. This is just an outline figure for guidance, however; it will vary depending on individual delegates and the mode of delivery.

Progression

The OSSM course helps people develop the kind of knowledge and understanding that would enhance their workplace performance and so help prepare them for greater responsibility.
